Ajahn Brahm is taking a classic text compiled by the Venerable Nyanatiloka titled the “Word of the Buddha” which provides a staged summary of the Buddha Dhamma. But Ajahn Brahm is heavily revising the text to bring it up to date with contemporary English language usage. This is the first in a series dealing with the Word of the Buddha anthology.
This is the second part of the the series.
Apologies that the first 3 minutes are poor audio quality. After the 3 minute mark the problem is rectified and the rest of the recording has good audio.

A lay person is puzzled at how, despite their long practice, they still have greedy or hateful thoughts. The Buddha explains the importance of absorption meditation for letting go such attachments. But he also criticizes self-mortification, and recounts a previous dialog with Jain ascetics.
