Early Buddhism Course | Workshop 4 | Session 3 | 25 May 2013
Tuesday Oct 02, 2018
Tuesday Oct 02, 2018
Ajahn Brahmali and Ajahn Sujato are not just forest monks but authoritative scholars actively researching early Buddhist history trying to get an authentic understanding of who the Buddha was and the events surrounding his life by investigating multiple sources, including the discourses of all major Buddhist traditions.
This course won't just enlighten the listener about the early Buddhist world and who the real historical Buddha was, but will cast these events in a fresh light free from the dogma of any one Buddhist school.

His commentary on the reaction many have to Determinism is really brilliant! Great points! But I think the real fear of Determinism - especially "hard"determinism (which, no, Physicists have not yet proven 100%) - is that it leads to Nihilism which leads to Pol Pot. That genocide can become a perverted form of Empathy to"reduce Suffering", you see. That's a healthy fear, based on human beings ability to Rationalize & Justify ANYTHING, so long as they get what they want. Some Philosophies can lead to Authoritarianism, others to Anarchy. Neither work because most people want different things at the same time. (e.g. Freedom AND Constancy). Pardon my babbling! But Sujahto touches on some specific Philosophical ideas, and that brings out my inner pseudo-Philosopher 😁

Sorry for multiple posts! Sujahto mentions "motivation" and meditation...and I wonder if basic curiosity rather than seeking some "self improvement" is viewed? If improvement of some sort occurs, wonderful! I don't know if it's "wrong" to Buddhist teachers that one it's propelled by curiosity, but there it is :P
